I may have posted a few of these awhile back, but I don't think I ever posted all of them. These are a couple of shots from the "Foreplay at Nelson J" shoot I did for Arsenic Magazine at the Nelson J Salon in Beverly Hills. The model is the Russian beauty Anastasia Chentsova.
Twerking Gone Wrong
I wouldn't normally post something like this, but I found it to be funny. Twerking = Epic Fail.
Agent Provocateur - "Love Me Tender"
Here's another great video titled "Love Me Tender" written and directed by Greg Williams for Agent Provocateur featuring model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley . Agent Provocateur is a brand that I would love to collaborate with and actually have something I want to pitch to them in the next week or two.
SEXY JESSYKA IN "SUPERNATURAL" // VELVET TWO STRIPES // directed by marco rothenburger
I was just looking for some inspiration on Vimeo. I really want to shoot some video during my shoots. Maybe I'll start next week.
Lowepro & Joby Sponsorship
Yesterday I got an e-mail regarding sponsorship from Lowepro and JOBY which are sister companies owned by Daymen. Lowepro has been the only company that I've ever used when it comes to camera bags and I'm really excited to check out the new gear which they have been kind enough to send me. Along with two new bags I'll be getting some new GorillaPod items to play with. I've never used a GorillaPod before, but I've been meaning to pick one up for quite awhile and I'm looking forward to putting it to use.
The product that first turned me on to Lowepro and really sparked my interest was the SlingShot. I've taken this bag with me on all my travels over the past 4 years. It's spent a lot of time in planes, trains, and automobiles, as well has hikes through rain and snow in the mountains and the intense heat of the desert, never failing to protect my Nikon gear. I've never once had an issue with it and plan on still using it for a long time. Here's the original video that I saw when I first started looking into options for carrying my camera gear and what sold me on the SlingShot:
Photographer Spotlight - Brian Lima
Photographer Spotlight - 09.03.2013
Brian Lima is a good friend of mine and one of the photographers whose work first inspired me to really start pursuing photography. I met Brian sometime around 2003 in San Diego when he was photographing my band, he's now based out of Rhode Island. He has a great repertoire of work ranging from amazing concert photography to beautiful landscape images of New Zealand and incredible shots of the Dalai Lama during a once in a lifetime opportunity to follow him around during his most recent visit to the US. His music portfolio includes awesome shots of Bjork, Iggy Pop, U2, Coldplay, Jane's Addiction, Greg Laswell, Radiohead, and so many other great bands and musicians. I hope to one day be half the photographer Brian is. He is also one of the primary reasons I shoot on Nikon cameras, you tend to mimic your inspirations and I've been a big fan of Nikon gear ever since.

My Model Wish List - Emmanuelle Chriqui
The beautiful Canadian born actress and model Emmanuelle Chriqui is today's addition to My Model Wish List. She's been acting since she was a kid, but really jumped into fame when she played Sloan McQuewick in the HBO series Entourage. She's gorgeous and I want to work with her.
Question of the Day: How do you respectively get your models naked?
This is a question that was submitted to me today through my tumblr page :
anonymous asked:
How do you respectively get your models naked? Is that something you already discussed with them before ever meeting them? How do both of you get comfortable with each other. Have you ever been intimate/or tried to get intimate with any of your models?
my response:
Great question, it’s actually one I get asked frequently by both photographers and non-photographers alike. Each time I’ve done a shoot that involves nudity it’s always discussed beforehand. Usually we’ll send some references back and forth on the type of shots we want to do and then we move forward from there. Up to this point every nude shoot has been comfortable due to the fact that everything was discussed ahead of time so there aren’t any surprises and I’m working with professional models that have done this type of work plenty of times before shooting with me. The fact that the models are comfortable makes me comfortable, I think if they were nervous then that might make me feel a bit uncomfortable.
All the models I’ve worked with have told me that I’m easy to work with and they’re instantly comfortable with me, I attribute this to my attitude going into the shoot. When you know what you’re going to be shooting and focus on the photo shoot as nothing more than that, it allows you to keep things strictly professional and that’s the mindset you have to have before, during and after the shoot. If you’re intent is to get intimate with the model, you would be putting off a different vibe which would in turn make the model uncomfortable. For me photography is a creative outlet and a great way to meet new people with the same interests. I have never tried to make a move on any of the models I’ve worked with. I’m definitely not opposed to dating models, but trying to use a photo shoot as a means to pursue any sort of relationship with one is not the right time nor the place. If a relationship with one of the models were to develop outside of the professional work setting that would be a different story. If you want to shoot this type of photography you have to be able to separate the physical and emotional stuff from the professional stuff.
Thanks for the question!
Steve
My Model Wish List - Gabriella
Gabriella is another model that I've worked with on a few occasions, but she's such a fantastic model and friend that she has a permanent place on My Model Wish List. I first met her back in April of 2011 and at that point she was the third model I had ever shot. She's based in Budapest, Hungary, but works all over the world and recently appeared on the Playboy website. I always look forward to seeing her new photo sets and can't wait to work with her again. If you're on Facebook you can follow her at www.facebook.com/GabriellaTheModel. I'm hoping to work with her and Katey, another Budapest based model on My Model Wish List, sometime early next year.
Here is some of my past work with Gabriella www.steveslefteye.com/#/gabriella
Kate Beckinsale shot for Esquire HD
This video shot by photographer Greg Williams for Esquire is from 3 years ago and still inspires me. I would love to work with Kate Beckinsale.
A Life Well Lived | Jim Whittaker & 50 Years of Everest
"If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space." This is a quote that I live by. I believe we should all try new things whenever possible. Exploring the unknown and experiencing life outside your comfort zone is the only way to really know what it's like to live.
Photographer Spotlight - Yulia Gorodinski
Photographer Spotlight - 08.29.2013
Yesterday I was chatting with an Israel based photographer I've been following for awhile named Yulia Gorodinski. I think I first stumbled upon her work while I was browsing through photographers on Behance.net a few years ago. I was instantly a fan, not only because her photos are awesome, but because the main body of her work consists of self-portraits which she has managed to capture beautifully and creatively. I think it takes a true talent to be both the model and photographer and that talent is very apparent in her photographs. Yulia's work has appeared on the American Apparel site, issues of New York Art Magazine and Digital Camera Magazine, as well as exhibits in England and Spain. Check out this great interview with her on Dazed Digital to get a better idea of her background, inspirations and approach.
I'm looking forward to meeting her in person and collaborating with her sometime in the not so distant future either here in California or in Israel.
Random Selections of Tatiana Dieteman
I've been going through a few more of the images from the recent Arsenic Magazine shoot I did last Thursday in Venice Beach, here are a few random selections of the beautiful Tatiana Dieteman. You can follow her on Instagram at @tatiana_dieteman.
Random Selection of Alyssa Smith
Here's a random image I picked out of a batch of photos from my most recent shoot for Arsenic Magazine, this is model Alyssa Smith.
My Model Wish List - Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde . . . is HOT! Whether you're a guy or girl, photographer or not, I think everyone would want to take pictures of Olivia, which gives her all the more reason to be on My Model Wish List . I know I had seen her before she appeared on House, M.D. but it wasn't until she was on the show that I really began to take notice. She's graced the pages of GQ, Maxim, Cosmo, Glamour and many other publications. I don't really think any of the photographers she's worked with (that I have seen) have done her justice, she actually looks better in all the random natural snapshots I've seen of her. I think the photographers she's shot with have fallen back on bad habits of over editing instead of just capturing her natural good looks. I hope I'll somehow get a chance to shoot with her, even if that were to happen, she would still remain on My Model Wish List.
Drummer Wanted: Dean Zimmer
Two of my friends just posted this video on Facebook and I thought I would post it here because it's pretty amazing. It'll make you think twice before you judge someone or tell them they can't do something. This guy inspires me both as a musician and a human being.
Music of the Moment - Opus Orange
I first heard of Opus Orange when I stumbled upon a documentary about the John Muir Trail titled "Mile . . . Mile and a Half" which is really worth checking out, especially if you're into hiking and nature. The documentary is beautifully shot using Nikon D800s (I think) and GoPros. The primarily instrumental soundtrack compliments the scenery perfectly, partially because Paul Bessenbacher was along fort the journey and experienced it firsthand, which I'm sure really helped contribute to the composing process. You can check out 2 of the tracks on their site, listen to the full album on Spotify, or purchase it on iTunes or Amazon.
My Model Wish List - Alysha Nett
Even though I've shot with Alysha Nett before she's still on My Model Wish List. Alysha is an amazing model and an all around awesome person. Her hard work and drive are extremely inspiring to models and photographers alike. She has had great success and has built a huge following due to her dedicated work ethic. Her career continues to flourish through both her ability to be a professional hard working model, as well as her social networking skills. You can follow her on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. To see a few of the shots from our session at the Roosevelt in Hollywood back in September of 2011 click here.
William Painter on Location with Arsenic Magazine
On Thursday I was in Venice Beach, CA shooting for another project with Arsenic Magazine. This particular project was a collaboration with writer/director/producer Scott Z. Burns (Bourne Ultimatum, Contagion, The Informant) and DP Bryan Newman. I was shooting stills for Arsenic as well as some behind the scenes footage. In between takes I was able to leave the set to shoot a few outdoor shots with the beautiful models Alyssa Smith and Tatiana Dieteman represented by Next Model Management. It was really bright out when we were shooting, luckily William Painter was there to provide some comfort from the midday sun.
My Model Wish List - Sasha Grey
Sasha Grey . . . she's different from the other girls you'll find in My Model Wish List. I've done shoots with a Playboy model, a Penthouse model and a European porn star before, so shooting someone from that industry wouldn't necessarily be something new for me, but there's something that sets Sasha apart from those other models. It's probably because she seems like a bad ass that just doesn't give a fuck about what you think and there's something really sexy about that, not to mention she's extremely intellectual and well spoken which makes her that much more attractive. Awhile back she released her own book titled Neü Sex in which she gets behind the camera and documents her own life, I haven't checked it out yet, but I am interested in picking up a copy.
Sasha, if you stumble upon this post and want to shoot, send me an e-mail!
